50th Anniversary of the Closing of Saint Mary’s Convent/ High School in Miramichi

by Anthony McLean, Contributing Reporter

In 1967, Canada celebrated its 100th Birthday. But also that year it marked the end of an era in the former Town of Newcastle with the closing of Saint Mary’s Convent/ High School after many years of educating young girls from the Miramichi Region and beyond. This year marks 50 years since its closure and plans for a reunion to commemorate Saint Mary’s are well underway.

A celebration will be held at the Parish Centre of Saint Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Miramichi at 360 Newcastle Boulevard on Saturday July 8th and Sunday July 9th, 2017. Pre-registration for this event is required on or before Friday April 7th, 2017. The cost is $45 per person, which includes a meet and greet, supper, mass and closing luncheon.

Organisers are currently looking for pictures, stories, and other memorabilia for a slideshow presentation.

For tickets please contact Susan Butler by telephone at 622-1780 or email at susanbutler@xplornet.com or Roberta Innis by email at mal.roberta@ns.sympatico.ca.
