The City of Fredericton invites New Brunswick artists to submit design concepts for an art installation in the city’s Botanic Garden. Located on the west side of Odell park, the garden is a popular part of the city for pedestrians and outdoor enthusiasts. The selected piece will be installed in the Garden in the summer of 2015.
The selected artwork will be compatible with the goals of the Fredericton Botanic Garden. Artists’ submissions will be evaluated by a jury of arts professionals, members of the City’s Arts and Cultural Advisory Committee, and a member of the garden board. Submissions will be evaluated based on their ability to enhance the experience of users and visitors of the space.
This initiative is part of the City’s Culture Plan which hopes to bring more art and culture to the daily lives of Fredericton residents.
“It’s all to do with our public art direction and finding areas of the city that could really benefit from public art. This will give a bigger purpose and an added reason for people to visit the Botanic Garden,” says Deputy Mayor Eric Megarity, past Council liaison to the Botanic Garden Association. “It’s our hope that placing public art in the Botanic Gardens will spur on other organizations, both public and private, to invest in more public art in the garden. It’s a perfect fit.”
The budget is $15,000 (HST included) to include all expenses associated with the creation and installation of the piece, plus up to $2,000 for installation costs. Artists making submissions must be from New Brunswick and are requested to submit a resume/CV, a portfolio, and a rough design concept. From these submissions, the jury will create a shortlist of artists who will be expected to submit detailed design concepts for review, before deciding on a piece for installation.
