Costco features local food options

salmon steakIn a new initiative in accordance with the Department of Economic Development’s Export Development Program, local food is to be stocked in Atlantic Canadian Costco locations. Eight companies have been selected to feature two products each in the region’s stores to meet customer demand for locally made food.

The brands that will be appearing on Costco’s shelves include A Acadian Atlantic, Bonte Foods, Covered Bridge Chips, Érablière de la Montagne Verte, Érablière Denis Côté, Fancy Pokket, G.E. Barbours and Kookie Kutter. Their products will be available to sample in 6 regional stores until February 1 as part of a marketing initiative to drive popularity of local food options.

The participating food companies are receiving up to $5,000 each from the Export Development Program to showcase their products at the big-box store. For many of the food producers, having their products featured at Costco may pose some supply challenges but they are eager for the opportunity to market their products regionally.

If the marketing initiative is successful Costco may consider distributing the products across all 88 Canadian locations.
