Bboyizm Returns to Playhouse with Explosive New Performance

BboyizmOn Thursday, January 28 at 7:30 pm Canada’s premier street dance company Bboyizm returns to the Fredericton Playhouse with their explosive new piece, Music Creates Opportunity.

In this performance choreographer and Artistic Director Crazy Smooth explores themes of personal expression through authentic street dance. Music Creates Opportunity considers the intersection of rhythm, expression and community in the making of music and dance.

Audiences will witness music as a universal language that offers a multitude of possibilities for expression – whether the music is an external force or created by the dancers themselves. They will also experience the innovative concept of Rhythmic Contact as the dancers mix traditional forms of contact dance with music and rhythmic patterns, always within the context of street dance.

Ottawa-based Bboyizm was founded in 2004 with a goal of promoting the foundation, authenticity and true essence of street dance. The artistic philosophy of the company is based on the idea that a dancer’s self-expression is paramount, as described in the group’s motto: “Dance to express, not to impress.”

In addition to Bboyizm’s performance, the Playhouse is pleased to offer several Experience More! activities. Ticketholders are invited to attend a free Post-Show Facilitated Discussion with Lee Bolton, Executive Director of the Imperial Theatre. This relaxed discussion will offer participants new ways of thinking about the performance they have just seen. There is no charge, but participants must register in advance through the box office.

On Wednesday, January 27 at 7 pm, the Playhouse will host a Hip Hop Dance Workshop for kids ages nine to 16. Participants must register through the box office. On Friday, January 29 at 7 pm, a B-boy/ B-girl Dance Workshop will take place at the Base Gym in Oromocto, offered in partnership with the Gagetown Military Family Resource Centre and Personnel Support Programs. Interested participants ages nine to 16 can register by calling 422-2749. Both workshops will be led by members of Bboyizm, and no experience is required.

Tickets for Bboyizm are available through the Fredericton Playhouse box office by calling 458-8344 or online at www.theplayhouse.ca.
