Join us at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre in celebration of two new exhibitors, Alan Grabelsky and Elizabeth Vanderleelie, in the Charlotte Glencross and Penny Gallery! Opening reception will be held in the foyer of the building on Friday May 12th, 2017 from 5-7 pm.
Ink & Light on Paper: Limited Edition Prints by Alan Grabelsky
“I titled this exhibition INK AND LIGHT ON PAPER because at every stage in the process, and with whatever technique I employed, it was always light that transferred the image from one medium to the next one, until ultimately the final step was ink on paper.”
Within Ink and Light on Paper, the viewer will find the imagination of Alan amongst the variety of multi-layered printing techniques, including: lithography, ink wash, laser-etched wood block, silkscreen, and solar etching.
Alan has an deep career history in the Arts, where he received his MFA in Film and Video from the California Institute of the Arts and spent summers at the Rhode Island School of Design in printmaking. Join Alan in the celebration of his brilliant collection of work in the Charlotte Glencross Gallery from May 12th to July 31st.
Blues: Textile Exhibit by Elizabeth Vanderleelie
“The title Blues refers to the predominant colour in this series, but also to the essence of blues music, a genre that blends human lament with spiritual yearning. The emotional outpouring of sadness is coupled with an awareness that despair can be overcome through the energy of song and the rhythm of dance. There is a strong thread of hope, anticipation of better times ahead, and a feeling of being on the brink of a turnaround. The blues are endowed with a curative power.”
This May, Blues will be installed on the walls of the Penny Gallery, exhibiting the use of layered fabric and thread to create abstract compositions. “Illusions of depth and movement are the result of variations in texture and colour, as fibre is wound and secured around a tubular form.”
Elizabeth Vanderleelie studied painting and drawing at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto during the 1970s. In partnership with her husband, she owned and operated a commercial art gallery in Edmonton, Alberta for more than a decade. She currently resides in Cap-Pele NB where she maintains a studio for textile work and cultivates a field of lavender.
