WorkSafeNB launches “It’s Your Job” student video contest

group of smiling students standingWorkSafeNB has launched a contest to spread information about workplace safety aimed at high school students in the province. In co-operation with the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety, WorkSafe NB hopes to spread knowledge of workplace safety by challenging students to create two-minute videos that illustrate the importance of working safely.

Students who win the provincial contest will have their videos entered in a national “It’s Your Job” contest. The videos will be viewed across the country to be voted on in May 2015.

“Workplace safety for students is a top priority at WorkSafeNB,” said Gerard Adams, WorkSafeNB president and CEO in a statement. “Research shows that more than half of new workers are untrained in many safety aspects of their work. This leads to injuries and, unfortunately, in some cases, death,” he said. “This contest encourages students to be proactive – to understand their rights, be aware of their working environment at all times, and take action when necessary to keep themselves and other employees healthy and safe.”

According to WorkSafeNB, students are especially at risk for workplace injury. In 2014, more than 1,000 New Brunswick workers aged 15-24 experienced injury on the job. “It’s Your Job” was created to help spread knowledge of workplace safety and reduce the risk faced by young workers.

The contest includes a $1,000 first-place prize to both the winning student and their school. Second and third place prizes are $750 and $500 to both students and their schools respectively.

All high school students in the province are welcome to get involved in the contest. For “It’s Your Job” rules and entry form, please visit youthsafenb.ca. The deadline for entries is April 10, 2015. Last year’s winners can be viewed at WorkSafeNB’s YouTube Channel.
